"Emerging Heritage" shows Nakashima tradition New Hope Gazette November 5, 1998 This article contains 324 words.
The event is part of "The Nakashima Tradition: Origins and Continuity," a series of exhibitions and programs paying tribute to the late master craftsman George Nakashima. After a musical introduction by Claire Racamato, playing a wooden flute, Nakashima-Yarnall, an architect and craftsman in her own right, will speak about her new work and the artistic legacy from her father, George Nakashima, who spent his life "in deep apprenticeship," and "learning from the noble trees." She will interpret the Nakashima relationship to traditional Japanese design and will read excerpts from her upcoming book, "Nature, Form and Spirit" to be published by Harry Abrams. Joining Mira will be filmmaker Robert Hunsicker, who is creating a documentary film with the Nakashima for release in 2000. Mira will present a short slide show and Hunsicker, some clips from his recent interviews. Discussion from the floor is invited. "The Nakashima Tradition: Origins and Continuity" is a collaboration by Robert Aibel, owner of Philadelphia's Moderne Gallery, which specializes in classics of 20th-century design, and Nakashima-Yarnall, who continues to direct the Nakashima Studio and develop pieces of her own. "Vintage Works by George Nakashima" is showcased at Moderne Gallery. "Studio Pieces: Continuity and Growth" shows Mira's new group of furniture named Keisho (continuation). Both exhibits will continue through December 19. All of the exhibitions will help support George Nakashima's greatest endeavor, The Global Peace Altar/Table Project of the Nakashima Foundation for Peace. The Peace Table is a manifestation of Nakashima's dream to create a tangible focus for prayer and meditation, one for each of the continents. The Peace Table intended for Russia is now ready to be received. Funds raised through the collaboration between Moderne Gallery and the Nakashima Studio will help defray shipping and installation expenses and will provide seed money for peace-related activities. www.nakashimafoundation.org a 501C3 non-profit organization 1847 Aquetong Road New Hope, PA 18938 E-Mail The Nakashima Foundation Contact the webmaster |
